Casperia, once known as Aspra, has 1,200 inhabitants and is situated in the province of Rieti between the River Tiber and the Monti Sabini. It has been granted the Orange Flag by the Touring Club Italiano because of the quality of its tourist offer.

Casperia was mentioned by the Latin poet Virgil in his great work the Aeneid, the others authors like Silio Italico, Vibio Sequestre and Mauro Sevio Onorato describe it in their works. But it must be said that there are many doubts that they were referring to this Casperia!

The old hamlet reaches the height of 400 meters above sea level; it is an extraordinary example of medieval architecture, enclosed in its majestic walls erected in 1282. The houses rise along a labyrinth of narrow lanes and tortures flights of steps. Access is possible only on foot; through Porta Romana (to the west) and Porta Santa Maria (to the east) this gate is also known as Porta Reatina. Here one can admire the large public clock that marks the canonical hours.

At the top of the hill is Piazza San Giovanni with the Parish Church dedicated to that saint. Towers, walkways, ramparts, loopholes, casemates and forced passages all bear witness of Casperia's belligerent past.

In the summer the place fills with tourists from all over the world and the evenings are pasted in merriment consuming good food and wine.

"Casperia is one of those places were the transition from the old country way of life to the new modern urbanized and service oriented one has occurred without the massive destruction of past traditions" (Paolo Guzzanti, La Stampa)
