The territory of Cottanello has 2,400 hectors of forest and highland pastures, where the natural flora and fauna are still intact and the place is free from pollution and smog.

Walking here one feels as if embraced by the mountain. Of great beauty are the Parato and Fonte Cerro locations, situated to the north and east of Cottanello. The highland plateau situated at 800m climbs up to 1,200m it is located right on the border between the regions of Latium and Umbria.

Once on the crest there is a breathtaking view of the Valley of Rieti - the Holy Valley, to be enjoyed. Just below lays the Sanctuary of Greccio. Trekking from Cottanello it is possible to reach the "Prati di Sotto" at 900m, where the remains of a little hamlet are used to stable animals. From here one can reach the "Prati di Sopra", situated at 1100m, an ideal place for picnics and long walks (there is an area equipped with tables and barbeques spots).

The scenery is characterized by a series of clearings surrounded by woods of turkey oaks, downy, maple and beech trees. Two of which have become famous landmarks; the 'Faggio Scritto' and the 'Faggio con Acqua', situated in a location known as Fondo dei Faggi at Prati di Sopra along the path that leads to Monte Grande.

The Prati di Cottanello offers wonderful scenery year round, projecting the passerby into a different world and a different dimension.

The Hermitage of San Cataldo

Located just outside the village, the hermitage is sunken in a gigantic granite rock face that covers it in part like a roof, has been protecting Cottanello for more than a millennium.

Its origins date back to before the X century, founded by Benedictine monks that frequented the area to preach. They used it as a refuge and a place for meditations.

The Roman Villa

The last years of the II century were in Sabina characterized by a building boom in which numerous villas sprung up. One of these lies within the municipality of Cottanello, it has numerous mosaics but it is still not possible to define its total extension.

The Marble Quarry

At about 4 km from the villa, in a clearing in the forest is the famous re marble quarry whose stone is known as 'Pietra Persicnina' or 'Cottanello Marble'. Its use in Rome is documented for the first time in 1648 when it was employed on the Basilica of St. Peter for the first time. This was Rome's best known building site at the time. On it worked famous names like Bramante, Michelangelo and Bernini.
