The name "Colli della Sabina" is an origin controlled denomination reserved to white and red wines that meet conditions stipulated for their production. The grapes destined for the production of this wine must come from vineyard situated in the territory of the Province of Rieti, in particular the municipalities of the area known as "Bassa Sabina", of which some of the municipalities of the province of Rome belong to.
Of fundamental importance are the human factors connected to this territory, which through a consolidated tradition have contributed to producing the "Colli della Sabina" wine. Strabone affirmed that "all the land in Sabina is exceptionally rich in olive groves and vineyards". Pliny the elder mentioned the characteristic Sabine vine the "vinaciola", while Homer exalted the excellent quality of Sabine wine.
Sabina in Roman times was not urbanised by had numerous rustic villas where olive oil and wine were produced in great abundance. These would then be shipped to Rome along the Tiber in river barges. More recently Giuseppe Marocco in his "Monumenti dello Stato Pontifical e Relation Topographical did Omni Pease" (1828) refers to the donation made in 941 by a certain Insertion, son of Formosa to the Abbot Campone of Farfa of lands and vineyards.
Through the centuries viticulture has maintained its role as principal crop of the territory.
Thanks to their particular characteristics the DOC wines of Sabina have obtained numerous awards both locally, nationally and international, they feature well on the main Italian wine guides.
