Encompassed within the boundaries of the Municipality of Mompeo, one of the smallest in Sabina, the Monumento Naturale Gole del Farfa was created to protected an area that has survived for centuries; it's a marvellous tract of the Farfa Torrent, which is an affluent of the Tibur.

In this location the Farfa Torrent has formed a small but very picturesque gorge with cliffs covered in thick forest. The dominate trees are the turkey oaks and the hornbeams. Near the water course willow, poplars and the occasional alder have formed a tunnel with their branches reaching across to the other side. In the higher reaches, where there is more sunlight holms are abundant.

Because of its excellent conservation the area is considered of special interest and has been included in a list of places worthy of protection by the European Union.

The cliffs are the ideal habitat for birds like the Pperegrine Falcon, Eagle Owls and Mountain swifts. The more common species are the White Wagtail, the Green Woodpecker and the Water Blackbird.

The amphibian inhabitants include the Newt and the always rarer Yellow-Bellied toad. Roachs, Gobies, Brown Trout as well as fresh water shrimps and crabs populate the waters.

Mammals include Badgers, Foxes, Porcupines, and Weasels.

The Farfa Gorge is one of the most spectacular naturalistic places of Sabina, a spectacular canyon cut by a torrent and covered by rich vegetation.
