Casperia is one of those extraordinary places where the transition from rural culture to urban industrial culture has left no negative influences. Casperia is a town of about 1200 inhabitants in the Rieti province between the left bank of the Tiber river and the west flank of the Sabine Mountains, and it has been awarded the Bandiera Arancione (Orange Flag) by the Italian Touring Club for tourism and environmenta standing..
Casperia was cited in ancient times by Silio Italico, Vibius Sequestre , Mauro Servio Onorato and the latin poet Virgil in the Aeneid. The historical centre is an extraordinary example of medieval architecture enclosed by the walls which were erected in 1282. You can access the village on foot from different archways: Porta Romana (to the West) and Porta Santa Maria to the East - also known as Porta Reatina - where you can see the medieval clock that shows the original canonical time. The houses can be accessed up winding staircases and along streets that gradually become narrower due to the unusual spiral layout of the town. These narrow streets open onto squares leading to Piazza S. Giovanni Battista which is 400 meters above the sea level. Here you can visit the church of Saint John. The towers, trenches, ramparts, slots, casemates all bear witness to the rich history of Casperia (also known as Aspra). In the summer many tourists from all over the world visit the village to enjoy the evening festas, the wine and the good food.
