The Farfa Gorges are a beautiful part of Farfa river (branch of the Tiber) near Mompeo and they enclose an area which is still fairly uncontaminated. This small gorge surrounded by the woods is delightfully picturesque. These woods are mainly oak and hornbeam, with holm in the sunnier higher areas.. Near the Farfa stream there are riparian woods that form a "tunnel forest" with willows, poplars, alders and hornbeams.
As the area has been so well maintained there are numerous animal species and it has been awarded the Sites of Community Importance (SCI) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs)classifications by the European Union. The rockfaces of the gorge are an ideal habitat for birds such as the Peregrine Falcon, the Eagle Owl and also for the neighbouring Crag species.
The White Wagtail, the Green Woodpecker and the Great Dipper are the most common species. The rarest amphibians sighted here are the Spectacled Salamander and the unique Yellow-bellied Toad. There are also characteristic fish species that live in the clear waters of the Farfa stream along with shrimps and crayfish: Roach, Goby, Brown Trout., mammals species that live here are badgers, foxes, porcupines and weasels. The Farfa gorges are one of the most beautiful places in the Sabina: a spectacular canyon carved by the creek and surrounded by flourishing vegetation.
